Established in 1946 as the home of the Ethiopian Air Force, Harar Meda is a military airfield at Bishoftu (Debre Zeyit) rather than a commercial airport. It hosts the air force's main base, training centre and maintenance operations, and access is tightly controlled; no scheduled passenger or cargo services operate here. Activity is largely state and military, occasionally including outsized transport flights by aircraft such as the Antonov An-124 or Ilyushin Il-76. For civil air freight the field is effectively irrelevant — commercial shipments move through Addis Ababa Bole, the national hub roughly 40 kilometres away, and its Ethiopian Cargo terminal. Freight forwarders therefore treat Harar Meda as a military site, not a cargo option.
