ADD Airport (Addis Ababa Bole International Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

ADD, the IATA code for Addis Ababa Bole International Airport in Ethiopia, ranks among Africa's most significant air cargo hubs, anchored by Ethiopian Airlines Cargo's own freighter network. The carrier's second cargo terminal, operating since 2017, has an annual capacity of roughly one million tonnes, including dedicated cold-chain storage for pharmaceuticals and perishables such as cut flowers. In 2024 the airport handled 265,949 tonnes of cargo, up 7.1% year on year. A dedicated e-commerce logistics hub also opened in 2024 to speed sorting and distribution of small parcels. Ethiopian Airlines Cargo & Logistics Services was named African Cargo Airline of the Year at the 2025 Air Cargo Africa Awards, underscoring the site's standing in Africa's air freight network. Since Ethiopia is landlocked, multimodal onward transport relies on the port of Djibouti alongside road and rail links into the hinterland, with customs clearance handled directly at the cargo terminal's cold-chain facilities. Regional alternatives with comparable cargo infrastructure include Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi and Bahrain International Airport for connections toward the Gulf and Asia. For forwarders serving East and Central Africa, ADD functions as a central transfer point for flowers, pharmaceuticals and e-commerce shipments.
