DIR Airport (Aba Tenna Dejazmach Yilma International Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Khat, the region's time-critical cash crop, is the cargo that defines Dire Dawa Airport (IATA: DIR, ICAO: HADR) — Ethiopia's second international airport and the air freight anchor of the country's industrial east, 348 km from the Port of Djibouti. Some 25 km away sits Ethiopia's first free trade zone, combining the Dire Dawa Industrial Park with a dry port and a railway station; opened in 2022, it was declared fully operational in November 2024. Since October 2024 the zone has been directly connected to the Addis Ababa–Djibouti standard-gauge railway, making rail-sea-air chains practical for regional shippers. As of 2026 Ethiopian Airlines is the only scheduled carrier at the field, flying the 341 km leg to Addis Ababa (ADD) in about an hour and fifteen minutes, so freight travels as belly cargo rather than on dedicated freighters. Customs clearance follows Ethiopian Customs Commission rules, with eased conditions applying inside the free zone. A single 2,679 × 45 m asphalt runway (15/33) at 1,167 m elevation limits heavy freighter payloads. High-volume intercontinental traffic still consolidates at Addis Ababa Bole (ADD), with Djibouti–Ambouli (JIB) available as a fallback.
