GVA Airport (Geneva Cointrin International Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

The ICRC, UN agencies and Médecins Sans Frontières all sit in the city, and they regularly charter relief flights out of Geneva Airport (IATA: GVA, ICAO: LSGG) to crisis regions — humanitarian cargo is the local speciality. The airport lies so close to the border that it runs a dedicated French sector: passengers and goods from France reach the Cointrin terminal without formally entering Switzerland, and shipments can clear customs under either Swiss or French procedures. Freight handled roughly 94,337 tonnes including mail in 2025, up about 4 percent on the prior year and keeping Geneva second among Switzerland's national airports, far behind Zurich but sharply defined: watches and jewellery from the Jura arc, pharmaceuticals and fine art moving to and from the Geneva freeports. Cargo passes through the terminal on Route de Pré-Bois, fed by the belly capacity of long-haul services from Swiss, Emirates, Qatar Airways and United; full freighters remain rare. On the passenger side, some 17.9 million travellers in 2025 brought Geneva almost back to pre-pandemic levels and confirmed it as the largest easyJet base outside Britain. A new fee-and-quota scheme introduced in 2025 cut take-offs after 22:00 by nearly 25 percent. Access is tightly woven into the city: the railway station inside the terminal reaches the centre, 4 kilometres away, in minutes, the A1 motorway passes the site, and the French road network begins behind the fence.
