IZT Airport (General Antonio Cárdenas Rodríguez National Airport / Ixtepec Air Base) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Rail and sea, not air, define the logistics of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec — and Ixtepec's General Antonio Cárdenas Rodríguez field (IATA: IZT, ICAO: MMIT) is positioned as the air node beside them. Run by the Mexican Air Force, it returned to commercial service on 2 February 2026 after thirteen years without scheduled flights, with a link to Mexico City's Felipe Ángeles airport (NLU). There is no dedicated cargo terminal, so what freight moves does so as belly load on those few passenger services. Within the Interoceanic Corridor (CIIT), Ixtepec sits alongside the ports of Salina Cruz on the Pacific and Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf, the rebuilt trans-isthmus railway and Minatitlán's Canticas airport (MTT), with ten industrial development poles drawing investment from 2026 onward; whether that translates into air cargo volume is not yet documented. Forwarders therefore still route Oaxaca and isthmus shipments through Mexico City (MEX) or Veracruz (VER), clearing customs with Mexico's ANAM. Ixtepec's practical value today lies in moving project staff and urgent spare parts to the corridor's construction sites.
