GVX Airport (Gävle Sandviken Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Scheduled passenger service at Gävle Sandviken Airport (GVX, ICAO ESSK) ended back in 2000, and the field roughly 170 km north of Stockholm — also known as Gestrike Airport — has operated as a general-aviation base ever since. Its single runway measures about 2,000 metres, and today's movements are air taxi and air ambulance flights, survey work for the Swedish mapping authority Lantmäteriet, plus private and corporate aviation. There is no commercial freight handling, no cargo terminal and no air-cargo handling agent, and neither scheduled freighters nor integrators serve the site; runway length alone does not make a cargo airport. The surrounding industry is substantial — Sandvik at Sandviken and the steel operations of the Gästrikland corridor export heavily — but their volumes move by rail and road and through the Baltic port of Gävle. Air freight for the region is handled at Stockholm Arlanda (ARN), about 170 road kilometres south and Sweden's dominant cargo gateway with the full set of handling agents. No air-freight customs post exists at Gävle; as Sweden lies inside the EU customs territory, this affects third-country consignments only, and those route via Arlanda anyway. For shippers, GVX is a base for corporate and medical flying rather than a freight location.
