GEV Airport (Gällivare Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Mining, not air cargo, defines the catchment of Gällivare Airport (GEV, ICAO ESNG) in Swedish Lapland: the LKAB iron-ore operations at Malmberget move their output on the Malmbanan railway, while the airport offers two weekday rotations to Stockholm Arlanda. The site is run by Gällivare municipality and marketed as Lapland Airport, with PopulAir — the former Amapola Flyg — flying Fokker 50 equipment via Kramfors, and a single rotation on Sundays. No dedicated freight handling, cargo terminal or air-cargo handling agent is present; only limited belly capacity on the turboprop is available, which suits small consignments, documents and urgent spare parts. An air-freight customs post is not confirmed on site, and since Sweden lies inside the EU customs territory this concerns third-country goods only. Real air-cargo volumes go through Kiruna (KRN), roughly 120 road kilometres to the north-west, or Luleå (LLA), a good 200 kilometres to the south-east, both far better connected to Swedish freight flows. Project and heavy-lift cargo for the mines arrives by rail or through the Baltic port of Luleå and is trucked onwards. For shippers, GEV is a passenger and supply link rather than a freight location.
