Around 9.1 million passengers but only about 5,475 tonnes of cargo passed through Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) in 2024 — figures that capture its character as a passenger-led regional airport for northern Thailand. Almost all of that freight travels as belly cargo on scheduled flights rather than on dedicated freighters, which are virtually absent. Typical goods include regional perishables such as longan and cut flowers, handicrafts, and electronics and consumer items. Larger or intercontinental consignments are trucked or flown on feeders to the national cargo gateway at Suvarnabhumi (BKK). By road, the airport ties into the highway network serving the northern provinces and the Greater Mekong Subregion, though it has no rail-freight link. Serving the former Lanna capital, CNX also handles seasonal peaks of perishable farm exports that briefly absorb extra belly capacity. For shippers it functions as a regional feeder rather than a standalone freight base.
