Cut off by poor roads for much of the year, Besalampy on Madagascar's west coast depends on its airstrip (BPY, ICAO FMNQ) for links to the rest of the country. The field sits about 38 metres above sea level with a single runway 08/26, and during the December-to-April rains the air link carries what the tracks cannot. Domestic service comes from Madagascar Airlines and its regional brand Tsaradia, on thin and variable frequencies. There is no cargo terminal, handling agent or customs post; anything moving by air travels as incidental load on small turboprops. Air freight of any weight, and all clearance, goes through Antananarivo Ivato (TNR), the country's only international cargo entry point, with Mahajanga (MJN) to the north and Morondava (MOQ) to the south as regional alternatives. The surrounding Melaky region lives from rice, cattle and small-scale fishing, and its goods largely move by coastal vessel and unsealed road.
