The former RAE Bedford research airfield at Thurleigh is now a mixed-use site: re-licensed by the CAA in 2010 as Bedford Aerodrome, its southern half has become Thurleigh Business Park, where the old concrete runways are used among other things for storing new cars. Flying today runs off a grass strip and by prior arrangement with the operator only; there is no commercial air cargo, no scheduled traffic and no customs clearance. Freight from Bedfordshire is handled at London Stansted (STN), about 70 km to the south-east, or at East Midlands (EMA), the UK's largest dedicated cargo airport.
