The HTSUS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States) is the official US tariff code that assigns every good imported into the United States a ten-digit classification number. It is based on the international Harmonized System (HS) of the World Customs Organization (WCO), but extends it to ten digits — compared to six digits in the global HS code. The HTSUS contains more than 17,000 tariff lines in 99 chapters and is published and updated semi-annually by the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC). U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is the only authority that can issue legally binding classification rulings. For customs declarants and freight forwarders, the correct HTSUS code is crucial: it determines the applicable MFN tariff rate, any Section 301 additional duties, and anti-dumping or countervailing duty obligations. In the area of US forced labor tariffs in 2026, specific Chapter 99 codes (e.g. 9903.05.73, 9903.05.74 and 9903.05.98 for exemptions) govern the treatment of Swiss goods. Not to be confused with the HS code, which covers only the first six digits and is uniform worldwide.
