As of June 2026 — The Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS or HTSUS) is the official US tariff schedule by which imported goods are classified and their duty rates determined. It builds on the international Harmonized System (HS) of the World Customs Organization but extends its six-digit codes to ten digits for US-specific subdivisions. The HTS is published by the US International Trade Commission (USITC); its application and enforcement at the border fall to Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The HTS classification determines not only the regular duty rate but also whether additional tariffs such as Section 301 or Section 232 measures, antidumping or countervailing duties apply. A wrong classification can lead to back payments, penalties and delays, which is why correct HTS coding is a central step in every US import. To be distinguished from the internationally uniform HS code, which covers only the first six digits.
