A driver reaches the Swiss border and hands over a sheet listing the relevant customs declarations – in practice this document is called a collection slip or transit slip. It is the accompanying paper that links the physical transport to the electronically filed goods declarations and is presented to customs staff and to the authorities of neighbouring countries at the crossing. The slip shows the reference numbers of the declarations and serves as evidence that the consignment has been properly declared. In Switzerland's digital customs process it is to be replaced by the Digital Transport Slip (DTS); as long as most neighbouring customs administrations still require paper, however, drivers must continue to carry a printed DTS. It should not be confused with the goods declaration itself, which records the substantive customs content, nor with the assessment decision issued only after clearance as proof.
