The New Computerised Transit System (NCTS) is the European Union's electronic platform for processing customs transit procedures. It replaces paper-based transit documents with electronic declarations and assigns a unique MRN (Movement Reference Number) to each transit movement, allowing departure, transit, and destination customs offices to track shipments in real time. Freight forwarders and customs declarants use NCTS for all consignments moving under the Union Transit procedure or the Common Transit Convention – covering intra-EU movements as well as transits involving third countries such as Switzerland or Norway. The system verifies that customs debts are covered by the required guarantees and enables automatic discharge of the procedure upon arrival at destination. NCTS should not be confused with the ECS (Export Control System), which handles export declarations.
