Definition & Explanation
In ocean freight, cargo release is the carrier's or terminal operator's clearance of a shipment, making a container available for pick-up. Only once every precondition is met – original documents presented, freight and ancillary charges paid, customs clearance completed and no terminal hold outstanding – is the container released in the system and can be collected by truck, rail or barge. For planning purposes the release, not the discharge, is the decisive moment: a discharged container is not yet available, and an estimated time of arrival says nothing about when it may actually be picked up. If release is delayed, terminal storage and demurrage keep accruing even though the consignee could not have collected the box. In backlog situations after strikes or port congestion, release therefore has to be checked case by case rather than inferred from the discharge date.
