Definition & Explanation
Freight forwarders, airlines, airport operators, and customs authorities rely on Air Cargo Community Systems to exchange shipment data, customs documentation, and operational information in real time. These neutral, open electronic platforms connect all authorized stakeholders at an air cargo location, enabling fully digital processing from booking and cargo acceptance through customs clearance to delivery tracking. Unlike proprietary single-carrier or terminal solutions, community systems are built for open participation — new actors can be onboarded without establishing individual point-to-point interfaces. Centralizing data reduces error rates, eliminates redundant entry, and cuts cargo release and dwell times considerably. The IATA messaging standards Cargo-IMP and Cargo-XML provide the technical foundation for interoperable data exchange across these platforms.
