The USA and China aim to defuse the stalled trade dispute with a limited package. Under the name "30-for-30", each side has proposed goods worth approximately 30 billion US dollars that could be subject to lower tariffs in the future. China lists 1,619 US products. The American list comprises 77 Chinese product categories.
For importers, it is important to note: A list is not yet a tariff reduction. According to the published conditions, the relevant authorities must first review the proposals. Subsequently, any potential concessions must be implemented according to the respective national law. Until official publication in the customs tariff, the current tariff rate therefore remains in effect.
In parallel, the broader trade truce has been extended until January 10, 2027. This temporarily keeps certain additional escalation steps suspended. This provides shippers with somewhat more planning certainty, but does not permanently resolve the trade conflict.
In practice, it is not the product description in the sales catalog that matters, but the exact tariff classification number. Origin, manufacturer, and technical specifications can also be important. Companies should now compare their product master data with the published lists, but should not yet factor in savings firmly in their calculations.
