A customs tariff is the official schedule of duty rates applied to goods crossing international borders, structured around Harmonized System (HS) classification codes maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO). Once goods are assigned an HS code, importers and freight forwarders consult the tariff to determine the applicable rate. Beyond standard Most Favoured Nation (MFN) rates, the schedule incorporates preferential rates under free trade agreements, tariff rate quotas, and rules of origin. Each country or customs union maintains its own schedule – the EU operates TARIC, which consolidates all measures of the Common Customs Tariff in a single searchable database. Because trade agreements regularly alter applicable rates, always working from the current tariff version is essential.
