Digital Certificates of Origin Accelerate Processing
The Swiss customs landscape underwent a fundamental change in 2026. Since January 1st, export processes have been mandatory through the new system Passar. In parallel, the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security has been testing the digital issuance of EUR.1 certificates via the Certificat app in the ePortal since March 16th. The traditional visit to the customs office is no longer necessary. Stamps and paper are becoming less significant.
This means a clear adjustment for companies in operational processing. Passar replaces the previous systems and digitalizes the entire customs declaration. Exporters, freight forwarders, and customs authorities access the same data basis. This reduces the error rate concerning tariff numbers, rules of origin, and preference proofs.
A key advantage is evident in the certificates of origin. The EUR.1 document is crucial in international trade to benefit from customs preferences. This document is now created and transmitted digitally. The Certificat app allows for direct integration into existing ERP and transport management systems. Media disruptions are minimized.
Moreover, noticeable efficiency gains are achieved in daily operations. Shipments can be planned faster as customs clearances occur in real-time. This is a clear advantage, especially for time-sensitive air freight. Airports like Zurich and Geneva benefit from accelerated processes. The Rhine port of Basel also shows higher turnover speeds for export containers.
At the same time, freight forwarders bear increased responsibility. Correct data maintenance becomes a decisive factor. Errors in origin declarations or goods values directly affect customs clearance. Knowledge of customs tariff classification, Incoterms, and preference law is more crucial than ever.
Digitalization also brings greater transparency. Authorities can better track shipments. Companies gain more accurate insights into their supply chains. This strengthens planning reliability and reduces risks in international trade.
