The Portuguese government has selected Lufthansa Group's offer for entry into TAP Air Portugal. Lufthansa initially intends to acquire a minority stake. According to the company announcement of October 14, 2026, the offer for 44.9 percent of shares amounts to 1.025 billion euros; a possible acquisition of up to 49.9 percent could cost up to 1.2 billion euros due to additional employee shares and a time-dependent ticking fee. Euronews reports, citing the Portuguese government, a somewhat different total offer of 1.201 billion euros for 44.9 percent; the Lufthansa announcement itself states 1.025 billion euros at this point – for this article, the Lufthansa company announcement is used as the primary source for the structure of their offer. Thus the selection of the buyer has been completed; execution of the purchase remains pending. According to its own statements, Lufthansa is working on final contracts with the Portuguese government and the state-owned investment company Parpublica. The transaction also requires approval from the competent authorities, including the EU Commission. Portuguese Finance Minister Joaquim Miranda Sarmento was quoted by Euronews as estimating that privatization would be completed in 18 to 24 months, thus in 2028 – this is a statement by the Portuguese government, not a firm completion deadline confirmed by Lufthansa itself. Strategically, the focus is particularly on transatlantic connections. Lufthansa cites strengthening its position in the South Atlantic market and Portugal's connections to North and Latin America as objectives. For air freight forwarders, this is of interest, but it does not yet result in additional bookable cargo space – neither the Lufthansa announcement nor Euronews reporting mentions new flights, tonnages, or a start date for expanding South America air freight. A potential benefit could emerge if aircraft, connecting flights, or cargo marketing later align better. When and how this will occur must be specifically announced later. For current shipments, therefore, the actual booking conditions remain decisive. Freight forwarders should verify the available connection, confirmed weight, and handling at the transfer point. For perishable or particularly urgent goods, it is additionally important to note how much buffer time remains between flights. Those regularly shipping to South America can incorporate this development into their long-term planning. Binding transport commitments should continue to be based on confirmed flight schedules and prices.
