The bulk carrier "Cape Dao" was hit by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on September 23, 2026. According to the British shipping authority UKMTO, the vessel caught fire and subsequently drifted uncontrolled in the sea area.
The Omani Maritime Security Centre later provided additional information. Accordingly, the "Cape Dao" was attacked approximately 2.5 nautical miles off the Musandam province. A fire broke out in the engine room. One crew member was killed. The Omani Navy rescued the remaining 27 persons and provided medical care.
The vessel is a bulk carrier registered under the flag of Antigua and Barbuda. Such ships transport loose cargo such as ore, coal, or grain. The cargo aboard the "Cape Dao" and the extent of the ship's damage were not officially confirmed at first. It also remains unclear who was responsible for the attack. Reports that already name a specific aggressor should therefore be treated with caution.
The Strait of Hormuz is extremely important for trade in oil, gas, and other goods. For vessels from the Persian Gulf, there is no simple, equivalent alternative route. Therefore, each new attack can lead to waiting times, voyage cancellations, or stricter requirements from shipping companies and insurers.
