Crude oil, and crude oil only, moves across the berths at Sidi Kerir, the Mediterranean terminus of Egypt's SUMED pipeline some 27 kilometres west of Alexandria. Operated by the Arab Petroleum Pipelines Company, the facility has six offshore single-buoy mooring (SBM) berths capable of handling tankers up to 400,000 dwt, backed by 28 floating-roof tanks holding around 3.1 million m³ (roughly 19.5 million barrels) of storage. In 2026, SUMED throughput surged sharply: Kpler data recorded crude exports from Sidi Kerir of approximately 2.3 million barrels per day in August 2026, more than double the prior month, driven chiefly by Saudi crude rerouted to avoid Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. Aramco began offering spot crude cargoes from Sidi Kerir in July 2026, shortly after the Houthis announced a maritime embargo targeting Saudi shipping on 20 July; volumes thereby approached SUMED's maximum capacity of around 2.5 million barrels per day. For freight forwarders the implication is clear: there are no container, breakbulk or RoRo operations here, and no commercial customs clearance for trade goods. Shippers needing boxes, project cargo or conventional freight should route via Alexandria or the adjacent El Dekheila container terminal instead.
