About This Seaport
Owned by Chile's state copper corporation Codelco, the working cargo berth serving Chañaral is the adjacent Puerto Barquito, a mineral and fuel terminal on the Atacama coast. Copper concentrate is the dominant export: in 2025 Capstone Copper completed a first pilot shipment of about 11,300 tonnes of wet concentrate from its nearby Manto Verde mine. A roughly US$20 million Codelco upgrade added a new shiploader and refurbished storage and conveying equipment. This is a bulk and mining-logistics site rather than a container or general-cargo gateway, and liner container handling here is not confirmed. Hinterland links run by road, and historically by rail, to the mines around Potrerillos and Manto Verde. Shippers needing containers or breakbulk in the Atacama Region typically use Caldera, or the larger ore ports of Mejillones and Antofagasta.
