About This Seaport
Behind the UN/LOCODE CL IQQ lies one of northern Chile's most distinctive ports, set in the Tarapacá Region at the edge of the Atacama Desert. The Iquique Terminal Internacional (ITI) offers some 624 m of quay and up to 11.4 m of depth, handling containers, breakbulk, project and general cargo with an annual container capacity of around 370,000 TEU. Six mobile harbour cranes serve traffic dominated by mining, cross-border trade with Bolivia and the re-export business of the ZOFRI free zone just 5 km away. Established in 1975, ZOFRI is one of Latin America's largest free trade zones, allowing goods to be stored, processed and re-exported with customs and tax relief. Customs clearance is streamlined under this framework, and reefer cargo is handled. Road corridors link the port to the Bolivian altiplano. Antofagasta and Arica are the practical alternatives elsewhere in northern Chile.
