About This Seaport

Palm oil drives cargo work at Sandakan, the principal freight port on the east coast of the Malaysian state of Sabah, on the Sulu Sea. Operated by Sabah Ports (SPSB), the main wharf has four berths for general cargo, containers and dry bulk, backed by three separate liquid terminals handling palm oil and petroleum products. Alongside palm-oil exports, the port takes fertiliser imports and general breakbulk for the Sandakan region, with container throughput estimated in the order of 300,000 TEU a year. Inland distribution is by road only, as Sabah's east coast has no rail link. For large-scale container transhipment within the BIMP-EAGA growth area, Sapangar Bay near Kota Kinabalu is the lead gateway, while Tawau handles much of Sabah's remaining palm-oil volume. Shippers therefore use Sandakan specifically for palm oil, breakbulk and east-coast regional box traffic.
