About This Seaport
Rooted in the ancient silver and lead mines of Laurium, Lavrio (Lavrion) on the south-east tip of Attica has grown into the third busiest ferry port of the Athens area. About 180,000 passengers a year use its links to the western Cyclades - chiefly Kea and Kythnos - as well as the north-east Aegean and as far as Kavala. Beyond passenger and Ro-Ro ferries, separate commercial quays handle minerals, industrial products and bulk commodities, though a cargo-pier depth of about 4.9 metres keeps the range limited and there is no significant container operation. Its position just 30 km from Athens International Airport makes it a convenient gateway, well connected to the capital by expressway. For containers and mainline services, Piraeus remains the principal port. For additional Cyclades sailings, Rafina is the other Attic ferry option.
