GR SDH Port (Soudha) – Terminals, Draft, Agents

About This Seaport

Ferries load through the night while bulk carriers wait offshore in one of the eastern Mediterranean's most sheltered bays — Souda, east of Chania on Crete. Its multipurpose terminal handles bulk carriers, container ships and ferries, with the daily year-round service to Piraeus — run by ANEK Lines and Blue Star Ferries — forming western Crete's main link to the mainland. Cargo is dominated by the region's farm output: olive oil, citrus, wine and vegetables on the export side, with seeds, potatoes, sugar and timber arriving. Container throughput stays modest and regional; for larger box volumes Heraklion is Crete's stronger port, while Piraeus serves as the national gateway. The Chania Port Authority manages operations, sharing the bay with a long-standing Greek Navy and NATO base. A new passenger and cruise terminal worth about €13 million, backed by EU recovery funding, is due for completion by the end of 2025. Hinterland access runs along Crete's north-coast highway, as the island has no railway.
