About This Seaport
Founded in 1850, the port of Coquimbo moves around 2.5 million tonnes of cargo a year for north-central Chile, split mainly between copper concentrate, fresh fruit, fishmeal and canned fish on the export side and wheat and maize on imports. Operated by Terminal Puerto Coquimbo (TPC), it offers roughly 1,200 metres of quay across four berths, divided between a cargo terminal and a dedicated cruise berth. Cold-storage capacity of about 5,000 cubic metres, 15,000 square metres of warehousing and 20 hectares of open yard underpin its reefer and perishables traffic. Hinterland links run chiefly by road to the mining districts around La Serena and Ovalle, as the port lacks a strong rail connection. Container services exist but, for major liner volumes, shippers generally use the larger ports of San Antonio and Valparaíso further south. Coquimbo thus works best as a specialised regional outlet for minerals, fruit and fish, complemented by cruise calls.
