About This Seaport
With nine liquefaction trains and roughly 30 million tonnes per annum of nameplate capacity, the Petronas LNG Complex at Bintulu ranks among the world's largest LNG export terminals and is Malaysia's sole LNG export gateway. Around three-quarters of port throughput is liquid bulk, so LNG dominates, alongside LPG, crude oil and petroleum products plus palm oil, urea/fertiliser and sawn timber. The port is multipurpose, with LNG jetties, bulk and breakbulk berths and a container terminal—reportedly East Malaysia's largest box facility. It serves as the import and export point for Sarawak and the wider BIMP-EAGA growth area, feeding a resource- and energy-driven hinterland. After operations resumed in May 2024 following a 2022 pipeline leak, technical glitches at the Satu and Dua trains caused cargo loading delays in 2025. For pure container volumes, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu regionally, and Port Klang nationally, remain key alternatives.
