Its trade is overwhelmingly regional: plywood and timber for the local wood industry, coir, cashew, tiles and bagged agricultural goods, alongside an active fishing fleet. Container capability exists but is limited, and the shallow draft rules out deep-sea vessels, which call instead at Kochi (Cochin) or New Mangalore. Road links to Kannur, about twelve kilometres inland, carry cargo to and from the hinterland.
