About This Seaport

Around 48.4 million tonnes of cargo passed through Kamarajar Port (formerly Ennore) in fiscal 2024/25, up 6.9 % — figures that mark it clearly as a major industrial and energy port, not a small coastal harbour. Lying about 20 km north of Chennai on the Coromandel Coast, it is one of India's state-owned Major Ports. Its mix is led by thermal-coal imports (about 57 % of volume), followed by containers (around 27 %, more than 670,000 TEU in 2023/24), vehicles, LPG, petroleum and chemicals. It also runs an automobile terminal, an LNG terminal and a common-user container terminal rated at up to 1.4 million TEU; since April 2024 PCA Automobiles has shipped the Citroën ë-C3 electric car from here, including exports to Indonesia. Hinterland links run by road and rail into greater Chennai and the wider south Indian industrial belt, with clearance handled by Indian port and customs administration. For pure container volumes the neighbouring Chennai Port is an option, while Krishnapatnam to the south handles bulk.
