Designed for up to 500,000 passengers a year, Sirte Gulf International reopened at the end of October 2025 after twelve years out of service, having been wrecked in the fighting from 2011. The site south of the coastal city of Sirte doubles as the Libyan Air Force's Ghardabiya air base and a civil airport. Its reopening drew aircraft from MedSky Airways and Buraq Air out of Tripoli and Berniq Airways from Benghazi. Positioned roughly midway between Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, it could in time prove useful for passenger and belly traffic, but it has no freight operation of its own yet. Heavier shipments for the region move through Misrata or Mitiga in Tripoli.
