Some 20,000 square meters of Lufthansa Technik hangar space sit on a former Strategic Air Command base: Rafael Hernández International (BQN) in Aguadilla occupies the grounds of Ramey Air Force Base, where B-52 bombers once rolled down what is still the longest runway in the Caribbean at 11,702 feet. Since 2015 the German MRO giant has overhauled aircraft for the American market here, while a FedEx terminal, the Main Cargo Terminal and freighter charters use the oversized infrastructure on Puerto Rico's west coast. Cargo volumes have been declining — a 2026 GAO study shows BQN losing tonnage to San Juan — yet the runway length and on-site CBP clearance keep Aguadilla the first choice for project cargo and charters in the island's west. FedEx has long eyed the site as a potential Caribbean distribution hub.
