MAZ Airport (Eugenio Maria De Hostos Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

One asphalt runway of 4,998 feet, one scheduled destination and no freight facilities at all: Eugenio María de Hostos Airport (MAZ/TJMZ) serves Puerto Rico's third-largest metropolitan area with Cape Air's daily Cessna 402 flights to San Juan, supported by the federal Essential Air Service programme. The airport sits about six kilometres north of Mayagüez and is operated by the Puerto Rico Ports Authority. Small piston aircraft can take baggage and small parcels, but there is no cargo terminal, no handling agent and no pallet capability, so commercial consignments never start here. Freight for western Puerto Rico is trucked roughly 45 kilometres to Aguadilla (BQN), which has an extra-long runway and cargo handling, or about 160 kilometres to San Juan (SJU), the island's main air freight gateway. Customs is rarely an obstacle, since Puerto Rico lies inside the US customs territory and mainland shipments move as domestic traffic; third-country imports clear at San Juan. Ocean freight can use the port of Mayagüez, though volumes concentrate on San Juan.
