Pokhara shows how an international label does not by itself create freight: opened on 1 January 2023 as Nepal's third international airport (IATA: PKR, ICAO: VNPK), it has so far drawn little scheduled overseas traffic. A Himalaya Airlines Pokhara-Lhasa service began in March 2025 but was suspended amid weak demand, while flydubai has been preparing a direct Dubai route as the airport's first durable international link. Built with a Chinese loan of about US$216 million, the 2,500-metre project has faced scrutiny over cost overruns and debt risk. Its real purpose is tourism, serving as the gateway to the Annapurna range and Phewa Lake. Dedicated cargo is slight, so shippers consolidate scheduled airfreight through Tribhuvan (KTM) in Kathmandu.
