Coded KGJ by IATA and FWKA by ICAO, Karonga sits at Malawi's northern tip, close to the Tanzanian border and the head of Lake Malawi. It handles occasional scheduled and charter flights toward Lilongwe but has no infrastructure for planned cargo. The area is known for the nearby Kayelekera uranium project, whose freight historically moved by road and seaport rather than by air. Heavy and export goods from the north travel overland toward Tanzanian ports or the Nacala Corridor. For dependable air freight, Kamuzu International (LLW) near Lilongwe is the nearest real option.
