GYE Airport (José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Set five kilometres north of downtown Guayaquil, Ecuador's largest city and principal seaport, José Joaquín de Olmedo is the country's second-busiest airport and the air-cargo outlet for its Pacific coast. Roughly 33,000 tonnes of freight move through annually, dominated by the region's signature exports: farmed shrimp, bananas, cocoa and cut flowers. The airport's location alongside the Port of Guayaquil lets shippers combine ocean and air links within a single export chain, an advantage for perishables that miss a vessel sailing. A dedicated cargo terminal offers refrigerated handling for temperature-controlled consignments and customs processing through Ecuador's SENAE authority. More than 15 carriers from North and South America serve the field, which is operated by concessionaire TAGSA. For forwarders, the coastal motorways feeding in from the shrimp farms of the Gulf of Guayaquil make it the natural consolidation point for the lowland export trade. Ecuador's shrimp exports, shipped mainly frozen by sea, hit a record 1.39 million tonnes (+15%) worth $7.47 billion in 2025, with January 2026 volumes up a further 23% and China the leading destination — for time-critical fresh product and flowers, though, GYE's air link remains the key reference point for the coast's export economy.
