GRQ Airport (Groningen Airport Eelde) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

A 2,500-metre runway, extended in 2013, gives Groningen Airport Eelde (GRQ/EHGG) more capability than its traffic figures suggest: the airport handled just over 113,000 passengers in 2024. It sits at Eelde in the province of Drenthe, about ten kilometres south of the city of Groningen, and is the only civil airport serving Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland, mainly with seasonal leisure flights — Corendon, SKY express to Heraklion and Emerald Airlines to Knock featured in the 2025 programme. There is no dedicated cargo terminal and no regular freighter operation, so air freight at GRQ means belly capacity on those leisure flights plus occasional charters. Scheduled airfreight, dangerous goods and specialised shipments go through Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS), roughly 200 road kilometres and under two hours away by truck; Bremen (BRE) across the German border is a second option for cross-border traffic. The KLM Flight Academy and the Lifeliner 4 air ambulance are also based at the field, and the long runway makes it a usable diversion airport. For forwarders in the north, the practical value of GRQ lies in road access to the seaports of Eemshaven and Delfzijl combined with air cargo handling at Schiphol.
