Civil flights left Gangneung on 2 April 2002, when the newly opened Yangyang International (YNY) took over east-coast services and the field reverted fully to military use — today K-18 (KAG / RKNN) hosts the Republic of Korea Air Force's 18th Fighter Wing. There is no passenger terminal, no cargo handling and no customs post, so the code still listed in airline databases carries no freight meaning. Air cargo from Gangwon province is trucked roughly 230 kilometres along the Yeongdong Expressway to Incheon (ICN), South Korea's dominant freight gateway, a two- to three-hour run depending on traffic. Since 2017 the KTX high-speed line has also connected Gangneung with Seoul in about two hours, which matters for courier consignments and airport pre-carriage. Yangyang remains the nearest civil airport for charter or seasonal demand, although it too handles no meaningful freight. Seaborne cargo for the region moves through the ports of Donghae and Mukho.
