BCH Airport (Cakung Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Timor-Leste's longest runway sits in Baucau rather than in the capital: Cakung Airport (BCH/WPEC) offers substantially more pavement than Dili's Presidente Nicolau Lobato International and could technically accept large commercial aircraft. That capability is currently unused — although classified as an international airport, the field is not open to civil scheduled traffic and serves military movements and medical evacuation flights, with no permanently staffed handling operation. Renovation work in 2022 repaired the runway and perimeter and added a warehouse building, which strengthens the site for relief operations; Baucau has served as a humanitarian logistics staging point during earlier emergencies. For commercial air freight, however, Cakung is not a usable option: shipments to Timor-Leste move through Dili (DIL), where the country's customs and cargo handling is concentrated. Larger volumes are typically routed via Darwin (DRW) in Australia or Denpasar (DPS) in Bali and fed onward by feeder flight, or by sea through the Port of Dili and the deep-water Tibar Bay terminal opened in 2022. The roughly 120-kilometre road link between Dili and Baucau is winding and vulnerable during the rainy season, which further limits the site's hinterland role.
