Road, river and air all serve Bas-Uélé province badly, and Buta Zega Airport (BZU/FZKJ) — four kilometres east of the provincial capital Buta, one runway 07/25 at 420 metres elevation — is no exception. The field carries light regional, on-demand and relief traffic; no cargo terminal, customs post or regular freighter service is documented at Buta. Forwarders moving air freight into the region work through Kisangani (FKI), roughly 260 kilometres to the south as the crow flies, or through the national gateway Kinshasa-Ndjili (FIH). Onward carriage to Buta then depends on poorly maintained tracks or, seasonally, on the Uele river system, which turns transit times into days or weeks. For time-critical or high-value consignments a charter out of Kisangani is usually the realistic option rather than waiting for capacity at Buta. Congolese customs and import formalities are handled at the major airports in any case, not in Bas-Uélé.
