At 5,007 feet (about 1,526 m), Alberto Carnevalli Airport (MRD/SVMD) ranks among Venezuela's highest commercial airfields and serves the Andean city of Mérida. Scheduled service returned in May 2023 after almost ten years, with Conviasa operating three weekly rotations from Caracas. There is no cargo terminal and no customs post on site, so international traffic — and with it any direct import or export clearance — is not possible here. Air freight for the Andes region is routed instead through Juan Pablo Pérez Alfonso Airport (VIG) at El Vigía, roughly 90 road kilometres away, or through Maiquetía Simón Bolívar (CCS) near Caracas for intercontinental shipments, followed by trucking over the mountain roads. Small consignments and express items travel as belly cargo on the domestic rotations or simply go by road. Altitude, wind and the weather in the Chama valley regularly curtail operations, so transit schedules need generous buffers.
