A semi-trailer with a 40-tonne maximum authorised mass and a 15-tonne tare therefore has a payload of 25 tonnes. For freight forwarders and shippers, payload is a core planning figure: it drives load optimisation, cost-per-tonne calculations, and routing decisions. In air freight, structural aircraft limits and the weight-to-volume relationship shape usable capacity. In maritime transport, the equivalent concept for vessels is deadweight tonnage (DWT).
