Unlike export statistics, which track outbound shipments, import statistics document all goods entering a country, broken down by volume, value, country of origin, and economic sector. Customs authorities collect the underlying data from import declarations; national statistical offices process and publish them at regular intervals. For importers, trade analysts, and policymakers, the figures reveal supply dependencies, map supply chain structures, and provide early warnings of market shifts. Statistical reliability depends directly on the completeness and timeliness of customs filings – incomplete or late declarations introduce gaps that carry through into derived indicators. Import statistics also provide the factual basis for trade defence instruments such as anti-dumping duties and import quotas.
