An HS Tariff Number is the six-digit commodity code of the World Customs Organization's Harmonized System (HS), uniquely identifying every commercially traded product worldwide. The first two digits denote the chapter, the next two the heading, and the final two the subheading—a hierarchical structure covering roughly 5,000 positions. Many customs territories extend this base code with national digits: the EU uses an eight-digit Combined Nomenclature (CN) and a ten-digit TARIC code to reflect duty rates, anti-dumping measures, and import controls. The HS Tariff Number appears on every customs declaration, governs the applicable duty rate, and underpins rules-of-origin certificates and export control assessments.
