Instead of years of construction work under running traffic, the general renovation (German: Generalsanierung) takes a radical approach: a rail line is fully closed for several months and renewed in one go – tracks, switches, signal boxes, overhead lines and stations. The concept originates in Germany, where DB InfraGO has been renovating the busiest high-performance corridors of the network in this way since 2024; the Riedbahn between Frankfurt and Mannheim came first, followed in 2025/26 by the Hamburg–Berlin axis. For rail freight, a general renovation means large-scale diversions via alternative corridors, longer transit times and scarce capacity – particularly critical for combined transport between seaport, terminal and hinterland. Freight forwarders must coordinate transit times and train path availability with the railways at an early stage. Not to be confused with routine maintenance, which covers selective repairs during ongoing operation without closing the line for an extended period.
