Definition & Explanation
A freight forwarding cooperation is an alliance of legally independent, mostly medium-sized forwarders that jointly operate a nationwide transport network, above all for less-than-truckload and groupage freight. Each partner handles collection and delivery in its own territory; consignments move through shared hubs and a common IT platform with uniform transit times, prices and quality standards. This gives the partners a network coverage they could not build alone and lets them compete with large corporate networks. Delivery territories are often assigned to a single partner. If a partner leaves or the alliance is dissolved, shippers and forwarders have to rearrange collection, delivery and transit-time commitments.
