Frontloading, also written front-loading, is the deliberate practice of pulling forward orders and shipments before expected tariffs, trade restrictions or cost increases take effect. Importers bring goods into the country early and place them into warehouse stock to avoid higher duties or uncertainty. For freight forwarders, frontloading creates short-term demand spikes: freight rates rise, vessels and terminals run at capacity, chassis and warehouse space become scarce — effects illustrated by the Port of Los Angeles, which handled over one million TEU in June 2026. Typical triggers are announced tariff hikes, looming sanctions or strikes. The downside: the pulled-forward volume is usually followed by a demand lull because warehouses are full — what arrives early today will be missing later. Not to be confused with the regular peak season, which recurs every year: frontloading is a one-off, event-driven shift of volume.
