ETA stands for Estimated Time of Arrival, the expected arrival time of a ship, aircraft, train or truck, or of a consignment, at its destination. In ocean shipping the carrier publishes an ETA for each port call and updates it continuously for weather, port congestion or route changes; the counterpart for departure is the ETD (Estimated Time of Departure), and the actual arrival time is the ATA (Actual Time of Arrival). The ETA is a forecast, not a guaranteed delivery date. For freight forwarders and consignees it is nevertheless the planning basis for customs declaration, pick-up, onward transport and warehouse capacity – an outdated ETA carries planning errors through the entire chain. Especially on uncertain routes, carrier ETA notices should be checked against the vessel's current position or terminal information. Not to be confused with transit time, which describes the entire duration from pick-up to delivery.
