An e-dec mapping rule defines how data from a company's own IT system is automatically transferred into the correct fields of the Swiss electronic customs declaration – essentially a translation rule between business software and the customs system. Freight forwarders, carriers and customs brokers set up these mapping rules so that data from ERP or TMS systems (e.g. exporter addresses, goods descriptions, net weights, customs tariff numbers) flows correctly into the prescribed field structure of e-dec Import or e-dec Export. Missing or incorrect rules cause data gaps and faulty declarations, leading to delays in assessment by the BAZG (Swiss Federal Office for Customs and Border Security). Rules are usually configured once during onboarding and adjusted whenever regulations change. Important in the migration context: e-dec is being progressively replaced by Passar (export/transit via Passar 1.0, import via Passar 2.0; the last e-dec import declaration is planned for 30 September 2027). Existing e-dec mapping rules must be re-mapped to Passar's new data model and its goods and transport declarations – so a mapping rule is a configuration object that requires ongoing maintenance rather than a one-off setup. It should be distinguished from the higher-level data transmission via Declar/ePortal interfaces. Last updated: July 2026.
